When you think about it, the whole thing does make sense. People who feel ashamed, embarrassed, or in doubt are definitely the easiest to manipulate...so people looking to manipulate are often going to try to steer you right toward those emotions.
And it's really hard - probably impossible - NOT to feel them. In my experience it's better not to try. Instead, I've learned to accept that emotions aren't realistic sometimes and just because I feel something, that doesn't mean it's an indication of some truth or deeper reality. It's just how something feels in that moment. So what if I've been made to feel awkward or ashamed? That doesn't mean I SHOULD be, or that I did anything to warrant it! It's helped me a lot to see things this way, though of course it takes time to foster the perspective.
