This is a MUCH needed perspective in our industry. Success for writers is never linear - nor is it linear for most people, so far as I can tell. But we writers are especially prone to the rhythms of our work and the people who purchase it, which aren't necessarily predictable or even rational!

Not all of us will "succeed" by the mainstream metrics, but we can still succeed. It's a constant dance of adjustment and definition...but sometimes that's the best part.
