Big Magic was one of THE pivotal books that helped me launch my career. And it’s not that I’m in her demographic (I’m too young and too happily married), but that she captured the sense of, well, magic that all of us secretly believe happens whenever we sit down to read, write, paint, or whatever it is we do.

Big Magic caught me right at that moment in life when you’re starting to try and give up on that magic in favor of “logical” (maculinized?) advice and so-called productivity jargon.

Fuck that. I’m happier and better writing like it’s magic - what else is art but spellcraft in tangible form? Creativity is miraculous, and she made that truth valid for me. Thank God!

She also helped me to open my doors (or my kindle’s doors) to many other, more diverse authors who share and perhaps inspired her love of that deep magic. I think her perspectives are wonderful in and of themselves, but they’re also a good gateway for privileged folks like me to start looking for more, less familiar voices.

We understanding from the place we stand, but after that, we have the option to start going into the less known places. Gilbert has a way of starting you out from where you stand but leading you elsewhere from that point on.

Love this write up, love your voice, and I’m glad I discovered you!
