At this point in our culture, men can hardly manage to be friends with each other. So, it makes sense that they fail miserably at being friends to women, who are at best viewed as "different humans" compared to the male default.

It's nearly impossible to have and sustain in-person friendships with men, and I personally don't entertain them anymore. I hope the culture changes with newer generations so that we can enjoy deep, meaningful friendships without sex being a factor...but women-to-women friendships will always be something special!
